6th March 2021 – Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah binti Pengiran Haji Salleh Ab Rahaman launched the 17th International School Brunei Borneo Global Issues Conference (ISB BGIC) at the International Convention Centre (ICC).

The event began with a welcoming address by Laura Thomas, Executive Principal of ISB. The keynote address of the conference’s theme, ‘Reduced Inequalities’, was delivered by guest speakers Haji Muhammad ‘Isamuddin bin Abdullah Juna, the Acting Director of the Brunei Prisons Department, Ministry of Home Affairs, Brunei and Noorsurainah Tengah as the Board member of An-Nur Harapan and proponent of the Uniklearn Programme.

Following the speakers, Her Royal Highness delivered a sabda before officially opening the conference.

Her Royal Highness then presented mementos to sponsors and supporters. The event is sponsored by Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd, Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd, Progresif Sdn Bhd and Brunei Cement, with support from TLT Enterprise, Interhouse, D’Sunlit and Brunei Press Sdn Bhd.

Also in attendance, the minister of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ehsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulo Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin. Her Royal Highness was also presented with a memento by to show ISB’s deep gratitude for consenting to grace the Opening Ceremony.

Also present during the ceremony were invited foreign dignitaries, school officials and student representatives. The ceremony was livestreamed at the school’s theatre for the rest of the participating delegates.

During the event Her Royal Highness also presented certificates of participation to representatives from twenty-two schools attending the conference and certificates of appreciation to the sponsors of the event before posing for a group photo with the certificate recipients.

The ISB BGIC is an annual student-led Model United Nations style conference where participants represent countries to address various views on current, real world issues. This initiative is aimed at the development of students’ understanding of global citizenship and critical skills in research, public speaking and negotiation.
